Some thoughts about the Payson Weather

November 1st, 2017 by Carolyn Stanley & Tim Ehrhardt

October was a very dry month in Payson and throughout Arizona. According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, Payson received just .01″ of rain which was the 7th driest October on record. Many cities in Arizona received no rain during the month of October. Temperatures were also above normal.

I haven’t had an overnight freeze at my house yet and I am at 6,000 feet which is about 1,000 feet higher than Payson. I can’t remember that happening. Every year seems to be different here, when it comes to weather. This one is no different. What will the rest of fall and winter hold for us? We’ll find out soon enough.

– Tim

(It’s worth noting that despite the dryness it is still gorgeous here and the weather has still been very nice.)

A Hummingbird Visits a Flower in Tim Ehrhardt’s Garden North of Payson

This time of year hummingbirds are a frequent visitor in Rim Country. National Geographic has a very interesting article about hummingbirds in their July issue. High speed cameras have been able to slow down the rapid motion of these incredible creatures, providing breathtaking pictures. The article and accompanying pictures are worth a look. Here’s a link to it.

Wintry Weather in Rim Country

January 1st, 2017 by Carolyn Stanley & Tim Ehrhardt

We hSnow Flocked Trees North of Payson, Arizonaave a mix of rain and snow in Rim Country today. I live at 6,000 feet elevation outside of Payson, Arizona, close to the Mogollon Rim. While it has been periodically raining the past two days, the precipitation finally turned to snow early this morning. The trees are now flocked with snow. The ground is mostly covered with it, though with a wet layer of moisture underneath. I have a fire going in my woodstove and it is cozy inside of my house.

As I understand it, and see from radar, it is raining in Payson, not snowing. This is not unusual. Payson it is at only 5,000 feet elevation and the 1,000 foot difference in elevation, as well as proximity to the Mogollon Rim, can make a big difference when it comes to moisture.

It should be noted that it’s not always this way this time of year. One year ago I began 2016 by hiking to the top of a white quartz bluff above Highway 260, just east of Little Green Valley. Wonderful contrasts, in a region full of them.
