Elk Under the Rim North of Payson

July 14th, 2017 by Carolyn Stanley & Tim Ehrhardt

The other morning I awoke to find some visitors in the forest behind me…a group of cow elk. These magnificent creatures were having their breakfast. Above are some pictures that I took of them. Keep in mind that I took the pictures at about 5:30 in the morning – very high ISO (12,800) and I did do some cropping and touch up work on the photos. I live about 35 minutes northeast of Payson with Myrtle Point on the Mogollon Rim as a prominent nearby outcropping. – Tim

Looking back on a winter hike to the Highline Trail

January 30th, 2017 by Carolyn Stanley & Tim Ehrhardt

North of Payson there is a place on the Highline Trail about a mile east of Ellison Creek where the trail crosses a big red rock wash. Normally the wash is dry but it’s a spot that you can tell that when the water runs, it really runs. Just as so many have, a friend and I passed through it during a summer hike on the Highline Trail. Since it’s about a mile from FR 29, we made a mental note of the spot and determined that sometime, when we figured it would be running, we would hike to it. On a late February day a few years ago that’s exactly what we did. The snow was melting quickly under our feet as we started out from FR 29, on a hill that locals call “Cattle Guard Hill.” We were not hiking on an established trail and we moved westward too quickly, finding ourselves on the hillside of a canyon in a foot of snow. We worked our way northward, eventually reaching the Highline Trail. The payoff was terrific, both at the Highline Trail and prior to it.

The recent snow made me think of this hike and it is one that I am thinking about doing again. But I want to time it just right. I want snow on the ground and preferably snow in the trees, but good water flow as well. Yes, I am being picky, but there are so many great hikes in Rim Country to choose from.

Wintry Weather in Rim Country

January 1st, 2017 by Carolyn Stanley & Tim Ehrhardt

We hSnow Flocked Trees North of Payson, Arizonaave a mix of rain and snow in Rim Country today. I live at 6,000 feet elevation outside of Payson, Arizona, close to the Mogollon Rim. While it has been periodically raining the past two days, the precipitation finally turned to snow early this morning. The trees are now flocked with snow. The ground is mostly covered with it, though with a wet layer of moisture underneath. I have a fire going in my woodstove and it is cozy inside of my house.

As I understand it, and see from radar, it is raining in Payson, not snowing. This is not unusual. Payson it is at only 5,000 feet elevation and the 1,000 foot difference in elevation, as well as proximity to the Mogollon Rim, can make a big difference when it comes to moisture.

It should be noted that it’s not always this way this time of year. One year ago I began 2016 by hiking to the top of a white quartz bluff above Highway 260, just east of Little Green Valley. Wonderful contrasts, in a region full of them.
